Race to the Top

It seems that the state Florida Education Association is opposed to a potential $700 million Race to the Top grant that would reward teachers based in part on the academic achievement of their students. The state union insists that all teachers should be rewarded equally, as if they had performed equally. They don’t. Let’s hope that the Hillsborough teachers union does not take this equal-pay-for-showing-up stance, as they have already started to work together with the Hillsborough school district on a pay-for-performance program under the Gates Grant. Reward the best teachers; let the worst go and don’t let up until every student entering the school system graduates as a productive, contributing citizen.
