Touting the Future

Tout: to solicit votes, or the like, importunately.

What is the state of coincidence in the world today? There always seems to be something sinister behind even the otherwise most seemingly of benign coincidences. Take for instance the USF architecture students who were recently  assigned the task of  designing light-rail stations.

There is a hotly contested tax increase measure on the Nov. 2, 2010 ballot to fund light-rail that will run in part, from USF to downtown Tampa. I don’t remember any previous “rail station” design assignments at USF prior to this tax increase going on the ballot.

One of the student design teams started work  for a location that was not at one of the proposed station locations and had to start over. Little wonder: ALL of the station locations proposed so far have not been determined. The actual station locations will only be revealed AFTER the tax increase is approved by voters.

The contest winning design models will go on display to the public, not so much to celebrate student design skills, but to get the voters fired-up to want one of these innovative stations in their neighborhood. Oh, and to encourage those voters to approve the tax increase to fund them.

OK, OK. I may be cynical about this whole student-design-rail-station thing, but the timing and promotion of the assignment is just too coincidental, this close to the November elections.
