Let Der Mouse build and run high-speed rail in Florida

Monorail Disney World, Orlando, May 2005

Why not Tampa to Orlando?

Now that Governor Rick Scott is asking some tough questions about the sustainability of the Tampa to Orland high-speed rail project, we all may finally get some tough answers.

Questions concern what is driving this project. Presumably it is to reduce the congestion on I-4 and create jobs in the process.

  1. How many people each day will actually get out of their cars to ride high-speed rail?
  2. How much are they willing to pay?
  3. How much will high-speed rail need to continually be subsidized by taxpayers?
  4. Is there another, more cost-effective way to grow more jobs in the region?
  5. What are the viable alternatives for moving people along I-4?
  6. Is this just going to be another tourist attraction, with taxpayer funding?

Where is the spirit of Walt Disney when you need it? Walt was a train nut, but also recognized the need to run a profitable operation. Based on Disney’s California theme park, the Orlando Disney park has three “trains”: the Disney Railroad, the Monorail and the People Mover. Added to these is an extensive inter-hotel/park bus system.

Essentially these run in circles, but are so much fun that people come from across the world to ride them. Would that work for the high-speed rail project?

Put the whole project under the supervision of folks at Disney Imagineering to come up with a viable transportation solution.

  1. Marilyn Smith Says:

SO VERY TRUE….NONE OF THE “TRAINS” are doing the described work of real trains. Moving freight and people over distances to distribute commodities and people to points of commerce..

I believe I have said this several times:

WE DO NOT NEED EMULATE OR IMITATE ORLANDO. We have much bigger engines of commerce. The natural resources of HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY outstrip the DER MOUSE ON A MONORAIL. We have ships, planes, great estuariers and bays. USF in TAMPA, ST.PETE., AND SARASOTA with INCUBATION MOVEMENTS FOR BUSINESSES IN TECHICALITIES; AND,
THE MEDICAL WORLD. WE HAVE MACDILL…!

Horace Greeley said it best: GO WEST YOUNG MAN, GO WEST.
He did not say go EAST. We have THE WEST COAST OF FLORDIA with significant ENGINES OF COMMERCE…I am not talking about BASEBALL, I am talking about industries that are not at the whim of mercurical personal multimillion dollars contracts. I am speaking of grounded industries that are not interested in out sources businesses…that was already done by some of those wonderful folks with names on buildings and hold big positions on TAMPA CHAMBER.

To move BETWEEN THE COUNTIES OF HERNANDO AND COLLIER WILL UTILIZE
THE I-75 CORRIDOR LONG PLACED SINCE THE 80’S. IT IS THE INFRASTRUCTURE IN PLACE…RIGHT NOW….
