Open letter to HART CEO David Armijo

The West Tampa Transfer Center on the northeas...

West Tampa Transfer Center

In your article Talking transit in Tampa in Thursday’s Tampa Tribune you write about all the wonderful things HART will be doing in Tampa, including a fully funded MetroRapid service between downtown and north Tampa.

Nowhere do you talk about HART support for “individual businesses” and “economic competitiveness” in unincorporated Hillsborough County south of Brandon.

Before you took the helm of HART, there was a “fully funded” SouthShore Transit Center to be located on 10 acres just east of the SouthShore County Service Center in Ruskin.

Where did that grant money go?

South Shore Transit Center reported missing

There are only two bus stops there now; one stuck out in the elements at the far end of the parking lot and the other in front of the Service Center which is closed before the first and last buses are scheduled. No telephones. No vending machines. No restrooms. No security. No weekend service.

Ruskin town center briefly had a park-and-ride but it now sits abandoned amid weeds and trash. It was not given sufficient chance to develop ridership.

The SouthShore Transit center location is not only adjacent to the Service Center, it is within walking distance of a tax office, a 4.5 Million Sq. Ft. commercial/industrial park, an HCC campus, a  high school, a sheriff sub-station and a shopping center. That location is well served by FlexService and could support express service to the downtown Transit Center.

Waiting for the busCirculating feeder-bus service could grow to meet expanding demand from the surrounding area, which has a significant low-income, under-served population. There are many homes in south county, but few jobs outside of Tampa.

Please add up the time it now takes residents of Sun City Center to ride the bus to and from Moffitt or the VA hospitals.
The present situation is unconscionable.

How much CIT money is HART burning through in light-rail studies alone? Has even one dime of CIT money ever gone to put a single bus on the road?

Waiting long?

Still waiting

Again, where did the grant money go that was to fund the SouthShore Transit Center?

Please do the right thing; find that money and build the SouthShore Transit Center.

Respectfully,

Fred Jacobsen

  1. Marilyn Smith Says:

The TALE of misuse and/or misfeasance is not new. The real misuses came when THE TOY TROLLEY became the dream of DICK GRECO and others who do not possess good sense. Thorough thinking or reality did not seem to belong with the mind set projected by the MAYOR GRECO.

Greco had lots of friends who thought anything he did was JUST DIVINE. Well, a couple years later we found out ABOUT the poor financial situation and fate of the CITY OF TAMPA. The poor condition of infrastructure TELLS THE FINANCIAL SITUATION….MONIES USED FOR OTHER THINGS….

Look at the YBOR entertainment CENTER, Mayor Greco straddled the TAMPA with an on going debt…..

By now perhaps we the people can see how moving money or misappropriation are NOT new in the GAME OF FINANCE FOR THE CITY OF TAMPA. The use of IMPACT FEES for the TROLLEY; BUT,THOSE IMPACT FEES WERE DESIGNATED FOR NEIGHBORHOODS IN THE CITY OF TAMPA.

Now, we also have WHAT HAPPENED TO THE FUNDING FOR THE SOUTHSHORE TRANSIT CENTER? It would appear the FUNDING FROM THE FED
was not used in the prescribed manner, so the FED DEMANDED the FUNDS
    BE RETURNED.

Right about now is where you need to know A PARTIAL LIST OF MISAPPROPRIATIONS: THE COST OVERRUN AT MARION STREET STATION; PART OF THE FUNDING USED FOR WORK ON CONTRACTS FOR THE CENTERS WITH CABS AND GREYHOUND FOR MULTI-MODAL WHICH NEVER CAME TO FRUITION; TO COVER THE TRACKS IN CHANNELSIDE THAT RON RONTELLA WANTED COVERED; COST OVERRUNS FOR THE LACK OF ADA REQUIREMENTS
AGAIN FOR THE TOY TROLLEY; AND, JUST TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY….there was never enough FUNDING to pay for personnel to operate the TRANSIT SERVICE CENTERS.

So, the TRANSIT CENTER is yet another MISMANAGEMENT PROJECT OF HART. NO MONEY NO COMPLETION FOR THE SERVICE CENTERS OR PARK AND RIDE.

This saga of HART AND THE CITY HAS MANY FACETS…..MORE LATER

  2. David, are you listening? Fred is right on the money!
