Pulling a rabbit out of thin air?

Rabbit out of a hatHow can Hillsborough County (acting) County Administrator Mike Merrill be “cobbling together” a financial package to lure Jackson Laboratory to locate here? Reportedly, the effort is based on a recently passed business tax break referendum.

This referendum, known as the Hillsborough County Economic Development Ad Valorem Tax Exemption Ordinance, limits tax incentives to $2 million per year for a maximum of 10 years.

Jackson Labs is asking north of $100 million. Even if they got all of the available tax incentives, this would only be $20 million, and leave nothing to attract other high-end employers such as Bass Pro Shops.

The Tax Exemption Ordinance also calls for public hearings before any incentives can be granted. What is our county doing operating out of the sunshine on this? Also, there is a March 1 deadline for any application to be filed. Are we helping them fill in the blanks?

Our county officials should not confuse going through the motions with making actual progress.

OH MY, How will that pronouncement from the MONOPOLY OF ROMAN CATHOLIC DIOCESE OF VENICE set with MIRACLE CARDINAL RICHELIEU?

These economic dept. folks think we do not know nor understand the economics of OUR WORLD. We do understand progress is not a word a monoply
likes to hear, unless it is progress with the practice of oppressing those who disagree with the HOLY SEE.

Ha ha we do not have $100million to dangle out there for JACKSON LABS.
Everything in the business news coverage is notorious and is public property.
The clandestine actions of ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT….operating on PUBLIC DOLLARS…..is ridiculous. THEN WE HAVE COMMISSIONERS WHO DENY RECEIVING DOCUMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC, EVEN WHEN THE BOCC RECORDS DO CONTAIN THOSE PUBLIC DOCS. So, how could anyone even think HAGAN OR HIGGY WOULD DEMAND HONESTY AND TRANSPARENCY FROM STAFF…STARTING WITH GARSYS ….then running down the pecking order.

Good observation, can we afford another corporate welfare project…Hillsborough County offers a good tax climate, great real estate resources, great medical partnerships, good labor pool and a pro-business BOCC. The days of big incentives are long gone. Strange, I guess the seminary did not leave an impression on economic development issues.

“Many months ago, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Venice in Florida, published a statement affirming the Roman Catholic Church’s stand against Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research, and publicly opposed the Jackson Lab project, declaring that it cannot be considered authentic economic development.” (Jackson Labs – Collier County Project)
