No hoodies, no s–t

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn has declared a “clean zone” in the downtown area for the 2012 RNC/GOP Convention.

This area includes everything south of Columbus Drive between Rome Ave. and Channelside, including Ybor City.

Visitors and residents of the “clean zone” will not be able to be on the streets carrying excrement or wearing hoodies.

This makes it a crime for dog owners to pickup after their dogs and for peace-loving teens to go outside in the middle of August in a hooded sweatshirt.

Why not ban dangerous broccoli spears while we’re at it?

GOP Shakedown

Who exactly, is the “Committee on Arrangements” and why are they shaking down Tampa hotels for up to $100 per room, just for the privilege of booking Republican National Convention guests?

Is this free-market economics or is it an example of vulture capitalism?

I suspect that every downtown Tampa hotel could fully book every hotel room during convention week without the help of The Committee.

After all, isn’t the GOP all about laissez-faire and not about thuggery?

Gingrich primus inter pares

Posted in GOP Convention, Politics, Second American Revolution with tags , , on January 29, 2012 by verbumsapienti2

Just what we need as a leader during a time of deep national and international volatility: someone like Newt Gingrich, described by the Tampa Tribune as “…still histrionic and overly confident.”!

His solution to governing is to ignore the Supreme Court when it is convenient and blindly follow the dictates of an ultra-conservative right-wing group which claims a special understanding of the U.S. Constitution.

For all their waving about of paperback copies of the Federalist Papers, has anyone actually read all 85 essays?

It is filled with dense prose and frequent references to ancient cultures and pivotal world leaders.

Hamilton, Madison and Jay read Latin, Greek and studied the political histories of Europe and the East, as did educated readers of the day.

Today, lacking that “liberal” education, we have to rely on sources like Google, a thick dictionary and our elected representatives to help us understand what our Founding Fathers understood about liberty and justice for all.

Take an example from Hamilton’s Federalist No. 34 to the People of the State of New York, January 4, 1788:

“It will be readily understood that I allude to the COMITIA CENTURIATA and the COMITIA TRIBUTA. The former, in which the people voted by centuries, was so arranged as to give a superiority to the patrician interest; in the latter, in which numbers prevailed, the plebian interest had an entire predominancy. And yet these two legislatures coexisted for ages, and the Roman republic attained to the utmost height of human greatness.”

What high school teacher today could readily enlighten an inquiring student on the meaning, context and implications of even this short passage?

We have dumbed down our schools, our teachers, our students and our selves about why we have this Constitution under which we live; and truly, even why we should care.

No wonder we are so willing to accept dumbed down political hacks to lead us.

Bayshore too Shabby

Posted in GOP Convention, Hillsborough County, FL with tags , , on January 9, 2012 by verbumsapienti2

Tampa’s Mayor Bob and the City Council think that Bayshore Blvd. has too many warts to please the out-of-town RNC media, set to come here for the August 2012 GOP Convention.

Never mind that Bayshore is one of the longest and most spectacular city walkways in the country; with magnificent views of the bay on one side and lines of colorful Mansions on the other.

A little “lipstick and a prom dress” instead of the usual house-coat and cold-cream might help parts of Bayshore, but what about the sack-cloth and ashes sported by much of the rest of downtown Tampa?

Either get one person to pickup a million pieces of trash and weeds between downtown and the Tampa Bay Times Forum, or get a million people to pick up just one piece.

With the expected summer rains and heavy growing season in August, the city may want to stage a Downtown Community Pride event the week before the media shows up; encouraging every man, woman and child in Tampa, led by the mayor and city council, to participate in a downtown clean-up.

Call it “Pick it up with Bob”.

And God created Tampa

Posted in GOP Convention, Hillsborough County, FL, Politics on January 6, 2012 by verbumsapienti2

Mayor Bob; did you catch the Daily Show Jan 4, 2012 segment: Indecision 2012 – GOP Almighty about each of the GOP candidates essentially saying that God is on their side?

Jon Stewart, admitting God created Tampa, speculated if God would therefore be at the Tampa  GOP convention in August. Daily Show contributor Wyatt Cenac shook his head and responded
“Have you BEEN to Tampa? That place is a s**t hole.”

Mayor Bob, say it ain’t so.

Take a noon walk from your office on E. Jackson St. to the Tampa Bay Times Forum, site of the GOP convention.

Take the most direct route there, along E. Washington and S. Jefferson.

See how many trash-bags you can fill along the way.

Walk it again at night. Alone.

See how many new friends you make along the way.

Mayor Bob; the city has two armored police vehicles and is borrowing twelve more, why do you need to spend a quarter of a million dollars of taxpayer money to buy yet another one? Fourteen armored vehicles is more than some banana republics have in their whole county. If you really need more of them to protect Tampans for a week, couldn’t your buddy Crist just send over a few more from the National Guard?

Clean up Tampa’s blight and unemployment first and maybe we wouldn’t need tanks to protect ourselves from one another.
