Gibbs High has a long way to go

Are we measuring and rewarding the wrong things?

Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg Florida goes from a “F” to (nearly) a “B” in two years and yet 15% of black students are still not reading at level.

Other schools which ranked “A” in previous years become “C” while more than 80% of students are reading at or above level.

How does one improve from an “A”?

This is like giving student athletes trophies for trying, and the top athletes nothing for winning, because they didn’t improve.

The business world is not going to hire high school graduates who cannot read on the basis that they will improve over time.

We are failing while we are handing out kudos.
